Case description
The NABU and SAPO have charged the former head of the Novopskov District Court of Luhansk Region, Roman Potapenko, with bribery.
According to the prosecution, Potapenko, through the mediation of lawyer Anatolii Voronkin, received a $5,500 bribe from a defendant in exchange for the court not placing her in custody. The defendant was suspected of committing fraud. In addition, in exchange for the bribe, the judge pledged to issue an acquittal.
The judge allegedly demanded $5,000 for his services, while $500 was intended for the lawyer’s mediation. The bribe was paid in installments, with the final $2,500 found in lawyer Voronkin’s car.
Potapenko's actions are classified under Article 368, Part 3, while Voronkin's mediation falls under Article 27, Part 5, and Article 368, Part 3 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
