Case description

Kolomyya-based judge Volodymyr Piatkovskyi is accused of taking a USD 1,200 bribe for not bringing a drunk driver to justice. He is facing up to 10 years in prison with confiscation of property.

Law enforcement agencies found that judge Piatkovskyi of the Kolomyiskyi District Court, with the assistance of legal counsel Kozak, received a USD 1,200 bribe from a citizen. Of this amount, Kozak received USD 200 for himself and handed over USD 1,000 to the judge. For this money, the judge allegedly had to not bring the driver to administrative liability for driving under the influence.

The defendants in the case were charged under Article 368, part 3 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. Kozak, as an accomplice, was sentenced to a 3-year probation period with a 2-year ban on practicing law, as he agreed to a plea deal.
