Case description
On June 10, 2021, the HACC found Oleh Vasyliuk, former Kovel City District Court judge, guilty of trying to impose a minimum sentence for minor hooliganism on a local for a bribe.
Oleh Vasyliuk worked at the Kovel court in Volyn oblast from 1992 to 2017, after which he retired. The events in this case took place in 2017, when administrative reports on minor hooliganism were drawn up against a local resident twice.
Vasyliuk reviewed the first report and sentenced the perpetrator to 60 hours of community service. After that, another judge of the same court received the second protocol for consideration. It was in relation to him that Vasyliuk promised to “negotiate” a minimum fine for a UAH 3,800 bribe. He was detained while receiving the money.
Vasyliuk's actions were classified under Article 369-2, part 2 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. He was fined UAH 25,500 and banned from being a judge for 3 years. The appellate instance then increased the main sentence, changing it to 2 years in prison. The Supreme Court later upheld the verdict.
