Case description
On September 25, 2020, the HACC convicted Oleksandr Matiushko, former prosecutor of the Prosecutor General's Office, for offering a bribe to members of the NABU selection commission. He was sentenced to 2 years of imprisonment.
Oleksandr Matiushko worked as a prosecutor first in Kirovohrad Oblast, and since 2013 — in the Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine. In November 2015, the selection commission admitted him to an interview for an administrative position in the NABU.
In February 2016, he offered USD 10,000 to a member of the NABU selection commission for his appointment to the vacant positions of head or deputy head of the NABU detective unit. An open competition was held for these positions; a little earlier, Matiushko had sent applications to the NABU to participate in it.
The crime was qualified under Art. 369, part 1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The HACC sentenced Matiushko to 2 years in prison.
Matiushko himself did not admit his guilt and stated that all this was “bribery and provocation to simulate a real fight against corruption.”
Lawyer of Matiushko filed appeal and cassation complaints against the court's decision. However, both the HACC Appeals Chamber and the Supreme Court left Matiushko's verdict unchanged.
