Case description
On January 20, 2022, the HACC found Oleksii Varakin, former Deputy Prosecutor of the Kirovohrad region, guilty of offering a bribe to a military prosecutor for not filing an appeal. He was imprisoned for 6 years.
Oleksii Varakin is a former Deputy Prosecutor of the Kirovohrad region who has worked in the prosecutor's office since March 2000.
In January 2017, he offered a USD 1,000 bribe to the military prosecutor of the Kirovohrad garrison in the Southern region of Ukraine for not filing an appeal against the decision of the Kirovohrad Regional Commercial Court. This decision, in turn, dismissed the prosecutor's claim to invalidate the 2010 lease agreement for a land plot of the Ministry of Defense between the Kirovohrad City Council and an individual entrepreneur. The General Inspectorate of the Prosecutor General's Office detained Varakin during the transfer of funds.
The court classified Varakin's actions under Article 369, part 3 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine and sentenced him to 6 years with confiscation of half of his property and a 3-year ban on holding certain positions. Varakin was also deprived of his rank of senior counselor of justice.
The day after the verdict was announced, the defense filed an appeal.
