Case description
On June 3, 2021, the HACC sentenced scandalous judge Hanna Bilyk to 6 years in prison. She “sold” the decision to return the confiscated fuel for USD 1,000.
Hanna Bilyk is a former judge of the Brovary City District Court in Kyiv oblast, known for her unjustified sentences. The Kyiv regional police recalled one of the cases when Bilyk set a small bail for suspected child rapists, which allowed them to be released.
As for another episode, where Bilyk was found guilty of bribery, she demanded a USD 1,000 bribe from a private enterprise for issuing a ruling in its favor clarifying the court's decision in the case of the confiscation of 13.5 tons of diesel fuel.
Prior to that, in June 2017, it considered a case in which the State Fiscal Service seized fuel from the company for selling it without permits. Bilyk then closed the proceedings due to the expiration of statute of limitations, but did not decide on the fate of the confiscated diesel engine—for this, she later asked for a bribe.
Bilyk's actions were classified under Article 368, part 3 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The ex-judge was sentenced to 6 years of inprisonment and banned from holding public office for 3 years. In addition, the court confiscated her car and a land plot in Kyiv oblast.
The appeal upheld the HACC verdict, and it came into force. The Supreme Court upheld the decisions of the HACC and the HACC Appeals Chamber.
Bilyk herself was detained during a search, but later she was on the wanted list for a year and hid from the enforcement of her sentence. At the end of 2022, she was discovered and sent to a pre-trial detention center.
