Case description
On February 17, 2022, the HACC found Viktor Sysa, the former head of the Hutia forestry, guilty of trying to bribe a NABU detective to close the proceedings on fraud in the forestry. Sysa was sentenced to 5.5 years.
In October 2019, Viktor Sysa, who headed the state-owned Hutia forestry, offered a NABU detective a USD 100,000 bribe to close the criminal proceedings against Sysa and his family.
The proceedings concerned the alienation of significant volumes of unaccounted-for timber from a forestry enterprise and the sale of timber at reduced prices. According to the investigation, in 2018, as director of the forestry, Sysa sold wood and timber to private companies controlled by Sysa's relatives.
Sysa's actions were classified under Article 369, part 3 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. He was sentenced to 5.5 years in prison with confiscation of part of his property.
In August 2023, Slovo i Dilo reported that Sysa had fled abroad.
